Mamma Reid is back! On Wednesday it was announced that after 8 years Jane Lynch will reprise her role as Diana Reid, the schizophrenic mother of Dr. Spencer Reid, who last appeared on the show in 2008. TV Guide reported that Lynch will appear in two episodes early next year for a "heavy Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) story," executive producer Erica Messer tells TV Guide. Her first appearance will come in Episode 11. "We're really excited. It's a fun Reid story and she's really excited to come back and reprise her role," Messer says. "She's been a busy lady and we're still here, so we're happy to be able to offer that opportunity for her to come back." Messer has been trying to get Lynch to come back to the show for years but Lynch hasn't been able to due to other commitments such as Glee and Angel From Hell. Diana's absence, of course, didn't stop the show from mentioning and giving updates on her. In Season 9, Reid received a postcard from his mom about her supervised trip to the Grand Canyon. And last season, Reid took a leave of absence to visit her at Bennington Sanitarium after she took a turn for the worst. He later revealed, during a cat-and-mouse hostage situation, that his mother has onset dementia and didn't recognize him right away. However, she was doing better by the finale, when Reid was planning a trip with her to Paris. "They did take a trip together. We learn about their trip to Paris in the premiere. Reid talks about that," Messer says. "[Her return] will be good. That's why everybody's excited. It was more important than ever to have Jane come guest-star because it will be a big story." Also Kirsten Vangness mentioned at the San Diego Comic-Con in July that her and Messer will be co-writing Episode 13 of the upcoming season which could be the concluding episode to Lynch's arc and if the last two episodes that Vangness and Messer co-wrote are anything to go by, it will be a tear-jerker whether it's happy tears or sad. Catch the Season 12 premiere of Criminal Minds on Wednesday, 28 Sept at 9/8c on CBS.
