In the wake of Thomas Gibson being fired from Criminal Minds, the CBS drama has promoted Paget Brewster to series regular. Brewster starred on the CBS procedural from 2006 to 2012, and has appeared in guest spots ever since. She will reprise her role as SSA Emily Prentiss with her first episode set for Oct. 12. “We’re all so excited to have Paget with us full time,” said exec producer Erica Messer in a statement. “The BAU family has definitely missed her, on screen and off. Having her back on set has been great, it’s like she never left.” Earlier this month, Gibson was let go from Criminal Minds after an on-set dust-up in which he allegedly kicked a producer. In the past, Gibson had been made to attend anger-management classes after reportedly shoving an assistant director. At the time of his ouster, the actor said in a statement: “I love Criminal Minds and have put my heart and soul into it for the last 12 years… I had hoped to see it through to the end, but that won’t be possible now.” Season 12 of “Criminal Minds” will see many casting changes. With the loss of Gibson and also long-running star Shemar Moore, who departed the series after Season 11, the show is filling up its ensemble with the return of Brewster and the previously announced Adam Rodriguez and Aisha Tyler, who was also recently upped to series regular. Joe Mantegna, Thomas Gibson, Matthew Gray Gubler, A.J. Cook and Kirsten Vangsness are all returning. TVLine reported last week that Criminal Minds is looking to add two new series regulars following Gibson’s exit, with one of the characters (presumably Brewster’s Prentiss) eyed to succeed Hotchner as team leader. Catch the Season 12 premiere of Criminal Minds on Wednesday, 28 Sept at 9/8c on CBS.
