In case you haven't heard, Season 12 of Criminal Minds premieres tonight and we've compiled a list of 10 things you need to know before the Season 12 premiere tonight. “The Crimson King” – Agent Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) joins the BAU team, which is tasked with capturing a killer who escaped prison with 13 other convicts at the end of last season. Here’s everything you need to know about “Criminal Minds” before watching the Season 12 premiere: 1. ANew Agent
2. Season Long storylineAt the end of last season, it was revealed that 13 serial killers had escaped from prison in the nail-biting Season 11 finale. This season will focus on catching the remaining 5 serial killers, including Peter Lewis a.k.a Mr. Scratch. In the season premiere, we learn that 8 of the 13 escaped serial killers have been caught over the Summer. 3. Mr. Scratch ReturnsOne of the 13 escaped serial killers Mr. Scratch, who tortured Hotch in Season 10 and then later got Hotch arrested in the Season 11 finale, will return in Season 12. Not only will Mr. Scratch appear in the Season 12 premiere, he will also be this seasons main villain. And after what he's already done to Hotch, it look's like he hasn't finished. 4. Hotch's Mysterious ExitAs everyone knows, last month Thomas Gibson (Aaron Hotchner) was fired from the show. And due to that, Hotch will only appear in the first 2 episodes of the season. But the most interesting aspect about that is how the character will exit the series. Originally before Gibson was fired, Hotch was assigned temporary duty elsewhere in episode 3, but now his character will no longer appear in the show, his exit remains a mystery. Will he resign, will his character be murdered by Mr. Scratch or will his character take a new job? 5. Prentiss Returns!6. Aisha Tyler Returns!Aisha Tyler (Dr. Tara Lewis) will return this season and will be promoted from her previous recurring role to Series Regular. Joining other female Series Regulars, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness and Paget Brewster this season. The BAU will have more girl power than ever before! 7. Garcia Doesn't "Like" Luke AlvezIn the season premiere we find out that Garcia isn't exactly fond of new BAU member and "Morgan's replacement", Luke Alvez. Of course, she's not actually peeved that Alvez is around -- baby girl could never be that cold-blooded -- she's just finally now forced to process Morgan's absence. "[She] doesn't quite know what to do with this, because liking anyone could feel like a betrayal to Morgan," Showrunner, Erica Messer says. "She has a little bit of a 'I'm not so sure what to do with this guy' runner. It's fun. It feels real and something different to play, certainly for Garcia, to not be accepting of him right away. But by the end of the episode, you know she's fond of him and this is going to be fun. She kind of plays against type for a while and I think that's going to be fun for the audience to see. She gets to go through the stages of it all." 8. In The Director's SeatSo far we know that both Matthew Gray Gubler and Joe Mantegna will be in the Director's seat this season. So far Gubler has directed episode 6 "Elliott's Pond" and Mantegna has directed episode 8 "Mirror Image". Originally, Thomas Gibson was meant to direct episode 4 "Keeper" but that never happened due to his dismissal from the show. 9. MAMA REID IS BACK!Not only are Brewster and Tyler returning but so is Dr. Diana Reid, the schizophrenic mother of Dr. Spencer Reid. Lynch will reprise her role in episode 11 which will air in early 2017 for a multi-episode arc that is a “heavy Reid story". Lynch first guested as Diana in the long-running thriller’s Season 1 finale. She last played the role in back-to-back Season 4 episodes, when a case sent the BAU to Las Vegas, where the character lives. 10. Episode 13 WritersKirsten Vangsness (Penelope Garcia) revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con in July that her and Messer will be co-writing Episode 13 of the upcoming season which could be the concluding episode to Lynch's arc and if the last two episodes that Vangness and Messer co-wrote are anything to go by, it will be a tear-jerker whether it's happy tears or sad. Catch the Season 12 premiere of Criminal Minds TONIGHT at 9/8c on CBS.
