After only being fired a month ago, Thomas Gibson is sharing his side of the story about the infamous on-set altercation with one of the show's writers that got him fired. Gibson originally received a two-episode suspension after news broke that he kicked writer-producer Virgil Williams on set in July while shooting the second episode of the upcoming season. However, Gibson was subsequently dismissed from the show entirely - a decision that took the actor by surprise, since he claims the altercation had been quickly resolved. "We were shooting a scene late one night when I went to Virgil and told him there was a line that I thought contradicted an earlier line," Gibson told People. "He said, 'Sorry, it's necessary, and I absolutely have to have it.'" Frustrated, Gibson says he returned back to set and was sharing Williams’ response with some of his castmates when Williams entered the room. "He came into that room and started coming towards me. As he brushed past me, my foot came up and tapped him on the leg," Gibson said. "If I hadn't moved, he would have run into me. We had some choice words, for which I apologized the next day, and that was it. It was over. We shot the scene, I went home - and I never got to go back." Gibson had already completed filming on the first two episodes of the season before he was fired and didn't return to set to film a proper exit. After Gibson's firing, it was announced that Paget Brewster, who was originally just set to guest-star this season, will return to the show as a series regular and Criminal Minds is reportedly looking to add two new characters in the wake of Gibson's departure. "It seems like they're trying to erase me from the show. That hurts. But I'm using this time to be with my kids, and I look forward to what's next," Gibson said. "Maybe I'll do a comedy, or a play, or direct, or produce." "My pride and reputation are hurt, but in the end I know the good work is what people will remember," he added. "I just need more opportunities to do good work and be a good guy." Thomas Gibson on DUI and Shemar Moore After speaking with People about his firing from Criminal Minds, Gibson also opened up about "misinformation" that has been spread about other incidents in his past including his alleged DUI and relationship with former co-star, Shemar Moore. One rumor Gibson takes particular umbrage with is that he is at odds with his former costar Shemar Moore. "Shemar and I did have disagreements early on. People work differently and have different priorities, but we are like brothers and worked through it," says Gibson. "I was so happy to direct the three-episode arc that was written to send him off, with hugs and kisses [at the end of last season]." The actor also wants to make it clear that he does not have a substance abuse problem, despite being arrested under suspicion of DUI in 2013. The evening of his arrest, "the night marathon was going on downtown, and a cop blocked me from entering my parking garage," says Gibson. "I drove around the block, and another cop gave me permission. When I got to my garage gate, the first cop told me to get out and put my hands on the car." The actor says things escalated quickly. "Suddenly five bike cops were running at me. One of them says, 'I smell alcohol.' I'd had one drink with a friend, but that was it. I passed their field sobriety test, but I refused [to blow into a Breathalyzer] and was arrested. My lawyer told me I could probably win if I fought the charge, but I didn't want to put my kids through a trial." Gibson will appear in the first two episodes of season 12 but “creative details for how the character’s exit will be addressed in the show will be announced at a later date,” reads a statement from ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios that was released to PEOPLE Aug. 12. Catch the Season 12 premiere of Criminal Minds on Wednesday, 28 Sept at 9/8c on CBS.
